Cold and Flu Season is Approaching: The Clutter Diet® Recommends Organizing the Medicine Cabinet Right Now
Austin, TX (PRWEB) November 12, 2007 -- After Americans get their flu shots, then they should head home and organize their medicine cabinets, suggests Certified Professional Organizer® Lorie Marrero, founder of The Clutter Diet®. A 2007 report from the Community Medical Foundation for Patient Safety noted that throughout the United States, the unused and expired medicines stockpiled in U.S. homes are rapidly becoming a major source of danger to communities. It continued to say that unfortunately, there is no systematic program for legally and safely dealing with these medicines.
"Clutter and disorganization in other parts of our lives can be daunting, but clutter and disorganization in our medicine cabinet can be dangerous," says Marrero. "As the cold and flu season approaches, we should all set aside time to clean out and organize this space. No one will want to do that if and when they are not feeling well."
Marrero first suggests taking everything out of the medicine cabinet and properly disposing of all expired and unneeded medicines. Then medicines should be organized by type of ailments, including fever and pain; ear-nose-throat-allergies; stomach and digestion; and first aid.
Marrero and her team also recommend that each family member have a special, labeled container for his or her own regular medicines and supplements. Drawer dividers or other shallow containers are excellent for this purpose. Regularly taken supplements and medicines should be organized once a week into a multi-day medicine container, so the same bottles do not need to be opened every single day.
Finally, make a list of anything that has been thrown out or otherwise identified as something needed in the newly reorganized space. This way, the cabinet is stocked and ready whenever a family member starts coughing in the middle of the night.
"A flu shot is the first step to flu prevention, but if someone still catches the virus, then an organized, well-stocked medicine cabinet will ensure that they are ready to take care of themselves and their family," says Marrero.
